WHAT PEOPLE SAY
Mag Balay is a vocalist of the new generation who has received teachings from a number of wonderful vocalists and musicians. She has taken from them the best they had to offer and added a lot of her own ideas, (...) she is a vocalist with her own personality, which is essential for me. . She has an original timbre, she sings economically, with sensibility, and she has an unusual vocal efficiency and an impressive vocal range
'She is gifted with an unusual musical imagination. She takes us on a journey through the world of very intimate sound landscapes. Inviting us on a common journey in the land of sophisticated rhythms, melodies and poetic stories, MagBalay’s music stirs ours imagination. She captivates us and lets us float with it above the horizon of the real world.'
'I would like to recommend a new, unusual personality of the vocal scene. Her name is Mag Balay, and she is a charismatic artist performing beautiful, romantic, vocal-instrumental works, in which she reaches high registers and descends into luscious valleys in daredevil melodies that are nevertheless performed lightly and gracefully.'
Mag Balay is a singer-songwriter, musician, dancer, performer and a fashion designer. She sings, composes music, plays the piano and designs her own stagewear. She performs music on stage and explores it in her various research. Mag appeared in the music industry in 2016 with her debut album entitled ‘’No borders”. In her music, she interweaves diverse influences, drawing on synth pop, art rock and a wide range of ethnic and folk sources, and mixing it with visual art and dance. Characteristic red hair look, fantastical costumes inspired by steampunk and historical wear, and a wide vocal range make the audience immerse in Balay’s world from the first note.
Mag connects her music with fantastical, mysterious, mythical and diverse nature. Born as a highlander in southern Poland nearby the Tatra Mountains, she is searching for the inspiration in cinematography and literature as well as in ethnic cultures and music, especially this connected with the mountains. Her music is imbued with strong electronic sounds and rhythms with the wide-range bright vocal and characteristic rich choral textures. Mag made her debut in 2016 with ‘’No borders” album which was promoted on many scenes and festivals, such as Radio Cracow, Radio Lublin, Radio Rzeszów, Satyrblues Festival, Cracow Salt Mine, etc. This music album has enabled Mag to work internationally with polish and foreign artists (it was registered and mastered in the cooperation with the University of Stavanger in Norway and The Banff Centre in Canada). At that time, Mag met a Polish pianist, composer and a producer Michal Wierba, and since then she shares her music and life with him.
Currently, both of them are working on their new multimedia project entitled ‘’Sea&Fire. Two worlds.” which is inspired by the fantasy genre and science-fiction. It is a musical and visual reflection of the idea of coexistence of two elements: nature and new technologies. The project is focusing on today’s world, the relation between the human and the nature with its ecological issues which are considered by the artists as one of the most important problems. “Sea&Fire. Two worlds.” is an audiovisual show - a combination of synthpop and visual art. The premiere is planned for summer/autumn 2019.
Mag Balay’s stagewear is the integral part of her artistic image and performances. Being in love with theatre, dance - she has been training ballet dance and rhythmic gymnastics since her childhood - and visual art and fashion, she has started creating costumes for herself and her team. Furthermore, she began her cooperation with Ewa Dunikowska and her fashion boutique Dagnez in 2017. Her stagewear is inspired by the 80’s and the 90’s esthetic, such as steampunk, historical costumes and the colors and textures of nature, such as shadings of green, silver, gold and blue. They are made individually, in single pieces with hand-made trimmings presenting the highest quality. Mag Balay’s costumes are worn by Michał Wierba during his solo performances as well. She also cooperates with Tyvodar Jewellery. As one can probably notice, music is not enough for Mag…She combines practice with theory as a researcher in the area of spiritual and cultural aspects of music and musical education. She writes articles and presents her works at various conferences. For now, she is working on her first book about a Polish composer and playwright Bogusław Schaeffer, and she is preparing her PhD thesis based on her research among musicians and artists who are associated with neoshamanism in the USA.
In her life, as well as in art, she can’t stand the lack of imagination. Mag strongly believes in the value of variety and colorfulness and following different paths simultaneously, which she considers inspiring, powerful and evolving. To touch the real beauty, You need to look beyond the horizon and let Yourself make for the open sea. Maybe then You will see that all Your dreams and desires are within reach.
